Remembering Ronald Reagan

I must disclose that I was a Reagan Democrat. As a conservative democrat, I voted for Ronald Reagan. I remain a conservative democrat, often referred to as a “Republicrat” by people like my father.

My father characterized conservative southern democrats as being a cross between republicans and democrats. We now refer to Republicrats as "swing voters."

With this in mind, I simply do not understand the characterization of Ronald Reagan as one of America's great Presidents. In my mind, any person who achieves the office of President is special. However, to be great among the men and women who achieve the office means that person is exceptional—to be a great President you must distinguish yourself, stand out from the crowd. Although I respect Mr. Reagan for what he accomplished in "tearing down that wall,” I do not think that Ronald Reagan should replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

Mr. Reagan is not a great President. During his administration, we suffered a depression, a stock market crash resulting in an economic downturn, and a huge national debt, a debt that cursed the first President Bush. To add insult to injury, we went through the Iran Contra affair-a controversy where the President authorized sales of weapons to the enemy.

Iran Contra is much worse than having an affair with a woman in the White House. Iran Contra represents selling arms to traitors of democracy, a betrayal of what our troops fight, and die, for. Despite the Iran Contra affair, Ronald Reagan made us feel good. He was the great communicator, he was the quintessential politician.

So…was Ronald Reagan a great President? We will have to let history judge his conduct as President.
